It’s getting cold out there! Is your skin feeling a little bit irritable or inflamed at the moment? Is it breaking out? Do you suffer from rosacea like me?
Here are my top 5 natural remedies to reduce inflammation and soothe skin…
Chamomile – I infuse loose chamomile blossoms in hot water and drink it as a tea. It is amazing at calming and soothing your mind AND your skin! We tend to focus on ‘fixing’ our skin through the use of skincare products that are applied topically, but remember our skin’s appearance is often as result of what we put into our bodies. Chamomile tea is caffeine free and full of inflammatory properties. My rosacea isn’t a fan of too much caffeine; it can make my skin blotchy and hot. This is a perfect remedy to keep redness and irritation at bay and a lovely alternative to black tea or coffee.
Oats – make a yummy breakfast and fuel you with energy but did you know they have have been used for centuries to help relieve itchy, dry and sensitive skin when applied topically? Oats are rich in anti-oxidants to defend and protect and they also have anti-inflammatory properties. They can really help people with eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. Soak some oats in water and apply on the affected area to cool, soothe and calm inflamed skin.
Green Tea – I am an absolute Green Tea addict! It contains a small amount of caffeine (perfect if you need a little boost in the morning) but it doesn’t have half as much as what you’d find in coffee. Green Tea is bursting full of anti-oxidants so it’s really great at defending you from free radicals that harm our cells (ooOOo science…) Try a cup of green tea today, i promise you won’t regret it!
Calamine – is amazing! It naturally cleanses the skin and contains Zinc Oxide which has powerful antiseptic properties. Calamine has been used for years to soothe skin, reduce redness and relieve itching. A perfect little remedy if you have sunburn, a mosquito bite or irritated red skin for example. I have often use a beautiful LUSH fresh face mask called Catastrophe Cosmetic with loads of calamine powder in it. It really helps to soothe my rosacea when it feels inflamed and angry.
Water – sounds so obvious I know, but are we all drinking enough of it? Water keeps us hydrated. When we are hydrated everything functions way better! We are more alert, it helps to flush out toxins in the body and it really is the most inexpensive way of improving our complexions (wahoo!). By drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated, the nutrients in our body are effectively and efficiently delivered to where they are supposed to be. As a result we look fresher, we feel better and we ARE healthier. Drink that water!
